Frequently Asked Questions

[acc_item title=”1. Do you sell portfolios at your school? “]This is the biggest misconception in our business–that you can “buy” a portfolio. A real portfolio, or model’s “book”, as it’s called, is really a scrapbook, a compilation of all your work (experience) in the business. No one can buy experience. If portfolios had been called “scrapbooks”, EVERYONE would know not to buy one. Any school selling portfolios isn’t being successful with the quality of their education, so they’re making money on pictures. Real talent agents only make money by taking a percentage of what their actors and models make; if they’re selling pictures, it’s a sure sign they’re not getting enough real work. BEWARE of schools and “agencies” selling pictures!![/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”2. Are you an agency, too?”]Better than that–we work with ALL the legitimate agencies including Screen Actors Guild Agents. The agents we work with won’t sell you anything. It is a conflict of interest to be a school and an agency. Unfortunately, when students attend the schools that say they’re agencies, too, they are never taught about the real agents and Screen Actors Guild. Although being a school & agency together is not illegal, it’s highly unethical if you’re serious about preparing actors and models and truly want your performers to succeed. We want our graduates to have every opportunity possible to work in the industry.[/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”3. How can I audition for a casting director?”]The Maile School is the home to top Casting Director John Peros. Like John, Most casting directors use agents to schedule auditions for their talent. You should never pay to go on an audition or just show up with out a call time.[/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”4. If you’re short, can you be a model?”]Yes, there is no height requirement in the Central Florida market. The way to get real agents excited about you if you’re not very tall is to be strong on camera. The commercial modeling market pays considerably more than the print and runway work available here. At auditions the most important factors are your believability, energy, professionalism and look! Generally, if you tell an agent in Central Florida you’re only goal is print modeling work and you don’t enjoy talking and meeting people, they won’t be very excited about sending you to any type of audition![/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”5. Do you offer any programs that are NOT geared towards modeling or acting?”]Of course, The Maile School offers programs for developing self esteem for any age including our Image & Confidence Development for teens, Executive Presence Packages, Etiquette and Manners for children and teens as well as private sessions we can design especially for your needs.[/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”6. Since The Maile School is just in Florida, is it as good as the national name modeling schools?”]Franchise schools usually brag about their hundreds of schools across the country that all teach the same course. But anyone within the industry knows that modeling in Miami is different from modeling in Orlando, because every market is unique. Anyone can buy a franchise. In Central Florida a couple of local franchise schools were purchased by parents for their young adult children as gifts. Industry experience was not a factor for these new owners… who wouldn’t have been qualified to teach at our school. As opposed to many schools who enroll every student in the same course (ie. Modeling), The Maile School offers different programs for different student needs. Our courses include Image & Confidence Development, Children’s Modeling (ages 6 -10), Children and Teen Etiquette, Professional Modeling (teens, adults), On Camera TV, Commercial & Film Acting for Children, (Ages 4 – 6, 7 – 10), Teens and Adults and Advanced Acting, Adult Executive Image and Personal Branding.[/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”7. Why do talents agents require training before they represent you?”]Agents earn income based on their (and your) success in getting bookings. Untrained clients are less likely to book. This is why we work with the reputable agencies. They send us talent they want trained and we send them back train professionals.[/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”8. Does the same instructor teach all of the classes?”]The Maile School hires top notch industry professionals who teach in their area of expertise with many having over 20 years of experience. We also have several instructors teach in the programs so the students are exposed to different teaching styles, backgrounds, personalities as well as techniques.[/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”9. Why do you encourage TEEN GIRLS to study Image & Confidence before Professional Modeling?”]The program is also called Modeling 1 and it’s all about your confidence and how you present yourself. If you are interested in working in our industry, this can also mean rejection for any performer, as no one can be selected for everything. At The Maile School, we know this, and have always presented our business honestly and accurately. It’s hard work, auditioning, networking, meeting clients and interviewing with agents. Performers, who have confidence, truly enjoy meeting others, believe in themselves and don’t take that rejection personally, ALWAYS are noticed for their positive attitude. We want our models and actors to feel comfortable in everyday situations, life skills as well as all aspects of the industry. Our Image & Confidence course, offers classes in first impressions, skin-care, make-up, hair design, wardrobe, etiquette, and manners, along with on-camera sessions in posture, beginning runway & body language, public speaking and interviewing skills. The course helps develop your best possible look, as well as confidence to face professional and social situations–it allows you to see yourself the way others see you.[/acc_item]
[acc_item title=”10. At what age do you begin your training?”]Whether you are 4 or 84, if you have the desire, we can help you. We offer programs starting at the age of four for children, teens and adults.
