November 2007

Celebrating 25 years!

Acting graduate Jacob Connolly will be starring in Cirque du Soleil's new winter show at Madison Square Garden in New York City November 1st - January 6th.  Cirque du Soleil will have its first seasonal show in New York at The WaMu Theater. This exciting new show is titled “Wintuk”.  Wintuk” is a winter tale about a young boy, Jamie, and his pursuit to find snow. The boy lives in a city where the onset of winter has brought long shadows and extreme cold – but no snow!  He interacts with a cast of high-energy urban street characters that include acrobats, dancers and giant marionettes. But as the snow fails to come, he embarks on a voyage to an imaginary Nordic world called “Wintuk” with three friends—a female Shaman who's lost in the city, a timid young man called Wimpy destined to discover his courage, and the shadow of a young girl—to find the snow and bring it back to where it belongs.

Jacob and his family, modeling graduate mom Michelle and acting and modeling graduate sister’s Hannah and Micah have been living in Montreal for the past couple of months to prepare for the show.  He is sharing the role with two other boys since there are at least 12 shows a week! Jacob has also booked work for “Rooms To Go”, and recorded an episode of “The Wonder Pets” as “Baby Armadillo” that will air next year.

WELCOME!!

The Maile School welcomes instructor Kathy Bee to our Children’s programs!  Kathy earned her bachelors degree in elementary education from Nicholls State University. She continued her education with graduate work in psychology and guidance counseling with emphasis on child and adolescence development.  After several years in the education field, she began to explore another passion; performing arts. She studied acting and with help from her husband, she managed to balance a teaching career and an acting career while raising a family.  Kathy created a curriculum for students ages Pre-K through middle school.  The program allowed children to develop their creative side while increasing their self confidence.

Kathy has performed in numerous commercials, industrial and independent films as well as live hosting. She is the creative producer of a pilot for a children’s show and the lead character in the show. She has also written a children’s book that she hopes to have published in the near future. She’s always looking for a way to help children reach their full potential.

WORK PLACE PROFESSIONAL TIPS

Have a Positive Attitude: Nothing works better -- in all situations -- than having & expressing a positive attitude. Let your enthusiasm show and be part of the team.

Dress Professionally/Blend in with Co-Workers: You should never underestimate the importance of dressing appropriately in your job. Dress how you want people to perceive you because it plays a huge role in how you are treated. (Perfectly groomed means efficient and reliable in work; unkempt means disorganized & therefore difficult to trust with different assignments.)

Ask Questions/Ask for Help: No one expects you to solve all the organization’s problems. Always ask questions or ask for help when you need it. Remember that it’s better to ask before you’ve completed the task the wrong way and wasted time. Be open-minded, be co-operative.

Be a Self-Starter /Take Initiative:  Whatever you do, don’t just sit there waiting for your next project. Be proactive. Don't wait for an assignment. Find something to do that is productive.

Work Full Days: Be on time, come in early, & stay a little later. There’s nothing that can affect your reputation faster than routinely coming into work late or leaving early. Be dedicated & flexible.

Avoid Office Politics and Gossip: As with any organization, the workplace is full of rumors & gossip. Your mission is to keep your nose clean of all of it. Be sure not to associate too often with the office gossips or risk having your image associated with them. DO NOT get involved in any trash talking around the office.  Don't repeat -- don't solicit gossip.

Keep Personal Business on Company Time to a Minimum: Studies show that just about everyone conducts some amount of personal business on company time -- checking email, making dinner reservations, buying stuff online. Your goal is to keep your personal business to a minimum & stay focused on work.

Listen More than Talk: Listen, Listen, Listen . . . don't act like a know-it-all. The idea is to communicate that you have very marketable skills. You are here to learn & apply your skills to help the organization achieve success

Track Accomplishments: Tracking your accomplishments is great for any number of reasons -- for your personal satisfaction, for raise & promotion meetings, & for jobs.

Show Appreciation: Nothing works like kindness & genuine appreciation. Show your appreciation to everyone who helps you- from your co-workers to receptionists to the human resources staff.
