Summer Adventures

Spencer Locke has had a busy year!  In fact, she appeared on our newsletter cover twice in 2005 (May & December)!  You may remember reading about her starring role in the upcoming Zemeckis/Spielberg project, Monster House, which is set to release this July.  Spencer has also had guest starring roles on shows including Phil of the Future & That’s So Raven.

Spencer’s latest success is her role in the upcoming Impact Pictures/Constantine Film’s project, Resident Evil: Extinction.  Spencer was cast in the lead role of “Angie” (aka “K-Mart”), who is a teenage girl found living in the ruins of a K-Mart.  Production began in mid-May on the film, which is being shot in Mexico.

The film stars Milla Jovovich, who appeared in the previous two Resident Evil movies. It is being directed by Russell Mulcahy, who has directed numerous projects including episodes of the 90s’s HBO hit, Tales from the Crypt and the 2006 Hallmark movie, The Curse of King Tut's Tomb.  The film’s writer, W.S. Anderson, directed the first Resident Evil film, but has since added many writing credits to his name including the hit thriller: AVP: Alien vs. Predator.

Spencer will have to take a break from filming Resident Evil: Extinction in July to attend the premier of Monster House.  Spencer starred as “Jenny” in a cast that also featured Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Nick Cannon.  The entire film was made using “performance capture” animation.

Congratulations, Spencer, on all you’ve achieved so far!  We can’t wait to see what’s next!

The only use of an obstacle is to be overcome.  All that an obstacle does with brave men is, not frighten them, but challenge them.

In The News

Acting Graduate, Paul Amadi, has spent the last five months in Los Angeles.  The time he’s spent auditioning out there paid off, and he landed a role in the Lifetime movie, My Life is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story.  You may remember Fantasia as a previous American Idol winner!  Paul will play “young Rico,” who is Fantasia’s brother.  My Life is Not a Fairy Tale is currently shooting in New Orleans, and will air on Lifetime in mid-August of this year.  Paul will not only be acting in the movie, but singing, as well!  Way to go, Paul!

Billie Jo Creamer, a graduate of both our Acting and Modeling classes, appeared as a police officer in an episode of Dr. G: Medical Examiner on the Discovery Health channel.  Billie Jo said when she shot Dr. G she felt like a Martin Lawrence character, because the only costume they had for her was ten sizes too large!  In spite of the “technical difficulties” on the Dr. G set,  Billie Jo booked another job on a Discovery Health project: a show called Skeleton Stories.  Keep up the great work, Billie Jo!

Acting grad, Kenon, participated in the annual Arts Festival on April 28th.  This regional event was sponsored by the Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, and is supported by several private schools in Central Florida.  Kenon competed in the “Humorous Interpretations,” performing a monologue by Lindsey Price entitled, “This Phone Will Explode at the Tone”.  This was Kenon’s first competitive event, and he came away with first prize!  Way to go, Kenon!  The win qualified him for the statewide competition at Palm Beach University in West Palm Beach, where he won second prize!

We’d like to thank all of the modeling and acting students who took part in the FOX Live Morning Show shoot at The Maile School on May 9th!

A huge thank you to Christine Van Blokland for covering our classes and camps!

Update from Art

Maile School co-founder, Art D'Alessandro, has a busy summer ahead involving several of his film projects.  This month the movie he wrote, The Final Season, is filming in Norway, Iowa.  Directed by David Mickey Evans (Sandlot, First Kid, Radio Flyer) and starring Sean Astin, Rachel Leigh Cook, Tom Arnold, Michael Angarano and Powers Boothe, Season is based on the true story of the Norway High baseball team's quest for a 20th state title the summer after the school has officially been closed.

On June 7, he'll be in Houston where his film ZZYZX is being shown at the first ever Odyssee Fest Film Festival, as the only feature length picture selected to screen among several short films.  ZZYZX, a dark, indie thriller, will make its south Florida premiere on July 29 at the Miami Independent Film and Music Festival and is now being represented for domestic distribution by Cut Entertainment Group and on the foreign front by PUSH Worldwide, both out of Los Angeles.

Later this summer, Art will head back out to Los Angeles to begin pre-production on Whirlabout, a drama dealing with a secret revealed during a father's decline into Alzheimer's Disease.   He also just received word from Grand Illusions Entertainment in Hollywood that they have attached Director Bob Balaban to Art's screenplay Bleep the Parents, a dark, coming-of-age comedy, dealing with a war between a father and son.  Balaban, whose acting career spans 30 plus years with credits including Close Encounters, Seinfeld, Gosford Park and M. Night Shayamalan's upcoming Lady in the Water, will surely attract A-list caliber stars to the project.

"Other projects are moving along, too," says Art, "I just can't talk about them yet.  I'm still hoping to produce and direct my film, Bliss, in Florida within the next year or two.  And I'll be looking forward to booking Maile School acting grads for that one!"
