SPOTLIGHT!
Children’s Acting Graduate Nathalie Calderon was born with a rare birth
defect called tibial hemimelia. She had 10 fingers and 10 toes, but her right
tibia stopped growing at the shin. Doctors amputated her lower leg when she was
a year old. As a little girl, she prayed at the dinner table for a leg so she
could be like everyone else, remembers her mother, Julie Calderon. For years,
Julie, a nurse, cried all the way to and from Nathalie’s doctor’s appointments.
“But when she was 5, I said to myself, you need to get over it. I want her to be able to do whatever she
wants.” That is what she did and
enrolled her into the acting program here at the
Her dream of performing didn’t stop at acting classes she then moved on to
dance classes! She attends Georgio’s American Dance Centre, where she’s part of
the senior company. She’s won three scholarships this year for her dancing, has
earned the respect of her peers and the adoration of audiences when she performs
hip hop, tap and ballet.
The attention is for her dancing, not for her disability!
Nathalie performs with her artificial leg. As a featured dancer in the
senior company, she performs in front of thousands while she leaps, pirouettes
and glides as the music carries her. Her current prosthetic was specifically
designed with more flexibility for dancing.
She will also
be appearing in the 2006 December issue of Dance Spirit, She has a speaking engagement
planned for March 2007 in Jackson Mississippi at a disability conference, and
she is presently being interviewed by Sweet Sixteen Magazine. Natalie’s talent is so inspiring that there
may be a movie in the making based on her life story!

A significant part of a hiring
decision is based on nonverbal elements in an interview--handshake, eye
contact, body language, posture, listening skills, clothing, grooming and
accessories. Don’t overlook the power of a good first impression. People make
amazing assumptions about your professional credibility and potential
performance based upon your appearance during a first meeting. It's very difficult
to overcome a poor first impression, regardless of your knowledge or expertise.
To be successful, research and
practice for the interview and carefully plan the professional image you want
to project. If you come to an interview dressed professionally, you will feel a
sense of confidence and others will sense your self-assurance. Many employers
interpret your appearance in terms of what you know about the world around you
and what attention you give to detail.
