The Student Becomes the Master

JUSTIN SMITH is the most recognized, on air TV personality in Orlando. Just ask any kid or teen, and they  know exactly who he is. Does this sound familiar? HEY GUYS,I’M JUSTIN SMITH, AND YOU’RE WATCHING WB18, YOUR HOME FOR LAUGHS.

For over two years the camera has followed Justin driving  his emblazoned PT cruiser  from location to location filming him interviewing celebs, unique and interesting clips which usually air between 5 and 8pm ,Monday thru Friday on the WB.

Justin has many years of training under his belt, including  Professional Modeling, TV Commercial Acting, Improvisation, Scene Study, Monologues, Vocal, Production, Stunts, and Directing. He continues to study to this day! Justin can be seen in commercials for Ron Jon’s, Seadoo , Wendy’s, WetnWild, and Universal Studios He recently completed shooting “The Touch”, an independent film which ,coincidently, was produced by Joe Lyons from Dream Vision, another Lisa Maile Graduate.

When asked to look in his crystal ball and describe his future, Justin spoke of his passion for “my craft”. While aspiring to achieve all that he can as an actor, he is also excited  to share his passion with young students.

We welcome Justin to instruct in the classroom to guide and share in his experiences and expertise in our Children’s programs, as well as in our Advanced Children’s classes. The advanced program will include a field trip to the WB and where students willperform their final commercial on the set . Grads will receive a copy of their performance.

Justin attributes his success to the following philosophies: Believe in yourself! Be Humble! Never take no for an answer! and Remember, they need you, you don’t need them. At The Maile School, we need him and are very happy to have him on our team!

“Selecting your foundation”

Selecting the proper foundation is often confusing when visiting the makeup counter. There are so many overwhelming choices.  Keep these simple hints in mind when selecting your shade:

The purpose of  foundation is to even out the tone and texture of your skin.  Select a shade that matches your skin’s natural undertone,  (pinky beige or golden yellow).  The right foundation will always disappear into your neck.  Test your shade ,not on your hand, but on your face!

Next ,select the texture your skin needs.  A smooth, soft complexion can go sheer, while someone needing more coverage might want a more medium to full coverage.

If your skin is normal to oily, always look for a water based oil- free makeup, and if your skin type is normal to dry ,choose a moisturizing cream based formula.

Proper blending is always the key to having a flawless face.  Using a cosmetic sponge or foundation brush allows you to blend evenly around the hairline, jaw line, and around the nose and above the lips.

Look for foundations with extra benefits such as sunscreens, anti -aging ingredients and light reflecting pigments.

Lastly, apply a light dusting of Loose Powder with a big fluffy Powder Brush to help set your foundation and give your face a perfect flawless finish every time!

IN THE NEWS

Congrats to Image/TV grad SHAWNDA THOMAS, last seen in the national McDonald's Salad Shooters commercial, now airing in the current ad for Metabolite. She looks incredible, and Metabolite is her 7th national spot this year! She shares with us her goal is 12 nationals in 2004, and she's getting close!  She recently shot for Southwest Airlines, as well as T.J. Maxx, #8 and #9!! Scheduled to film the last part of her reDesign show for HGTV on August 5, Shawnda is perhaps best remembered from her Sears appliance spot, appearing in a bathrobe & no make-up, sitting at the breakfast table when her husband grabs a milk carton from the fridge. Simultaneously, she says, "the refrigerator's broken", as he drinks milk from the carton & immediately spits it out.  Hope you exceed your personal quota, Shawnda!

Have you seen the Discovery Health Channel's new show, "Dr. G, Medical Examiner"?  TV grad MARIE BUCHMAN appeared in the first episode as 82-year-old "Maria", so tired of living she intentionally overdoses on Darviset, gets her stomach pumped, then suddenly dies of a heart attack!  Marie, who initially may not be recognizable to friends (with her hair dyed red and lots of wrinkles added for the role) spent a fun-filled 3 days shooting... Day 1 filmed at her "home" where, after ODing, real paramedics came, strapped her onto a stretcher and into an ambulance, where, unfortunately, the real Marie became violently ill due to motion sickness; Day 2 found her with actual doctors and nurses at Health Central getting her stomach pumped, then working with a real priest for last rites, and Day 3 shot at the coroner's office, where Marie lay motionless for 2 hours as a corpse, on "a cold, icy table...in just my underwear!"  Always a sport & a consummate professional, Marie confessed her son thought seeing mom in the morgue (even in a TV role) was a little spooky, but she enjoyed the challenge.  Working on a prior UCF student film allowed Marie to network, landing this part.  Anyone who knows the vivacious and bubbly actress is probably surprised to see her perfectly quiet and still!  Congrats, Marie... what a fun role!

Remember TV grad GINA TUTTLE (now in LA) from last month's IN THE NEWS?  She was  featured in Orlando Magazine as the 1st female & youngest actor ever to voice the Academy Awards.  This month, she was thrilled to be personally selected by director Spike Lee (after Sony Pictures chose another actor) to voice the trailer for his new film, “SHE HATE ME”.  Mr. Lee overrode Sony's decision upon hearing Gina, even though most trailer's feature men's voices.  Working with Spike Lee "was a blast", says Gina, who also voiced the final “IT'S GOOD TO BE” (featuring Justin Timberlake) on the E Channel this  month.  Watch -- & LISTEN -- for both with Gina very soon! PS  Q & A.  Guess why they call movie promos "trailers"?  Originally, they came at the end of a movie reel, "trailing" the film.

Watch for Broadway star NORM LEWIS, also featured in the above-mentioned Orlando Magazine article, speaking in a new national Olive Garden spot.  Norm's our TV grad who's appeared in 7 Broadway plays, including several leads, most recently the Richard Gere role in "Chicago".  Actors who love theatre, as he does, also love those TV residuals!

We're proud so many of our Acting grads use their talents in voice: Soon-to-be 12-year-old actor NATALIE EMERSON, who hosts "Nat Chat", recently featured in a full-page Orlando Sentinel article, has been talking to some pretty impressive guests on her radio show.  She recently interviewed actor Bryan Cranston from “Malcolm in the Middle”, Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors, national recording artists “The Beu Sisters”, composer Richard Gibbs, & soon speaks with the Sesame Street Live cast...& she's waiting to hear if she's landed an interview with Hillary Duff!   Nat uses her talk show for kids (which also has quite an adult following) to expose them to new ideas, give them the chance to speak with people they may not normally meet, & introduce them to different career choices. Nat recently volunteered to be a "Celebrity Server" when asked by Cold Stone Creamery to participate in the World's Largest Ice Cream Cake Social, benefiting the Make A Wish Foundation.  Listen to “Nat Chat on 1380 AM, Saturday mornings from 9-10, or live via internet at www.natalieemerson.com (click "on air").  You might hear Lisa Maile School President Debbie Wisner and Lisa on with Nat in the near future!

Continuing in radio, who's listened to Image & Acting grad ALICIA FRANK on her new XL 106.7 show Saturday evenings from midnight-7 am?  Known to XL's Doc & Johnny morning listeners as "Half-Pint" (her name affectionately coined by Johnny Magic when she interned with their show), Alicia's talents and work ethic so impressed the folks at Clear Channel, she not only landed a full-time position in promotions at the station, but also her own show.  More to come on her amazing accomplishments in a future issue!

If you enjoy central Florida radio, then you know the name NIKKI KNIGHT from HER days at XL when the talented actor/radio personality had her own show . After years in Florida, Nikki has relocated to the West Coast, living in Venice, CA, just south of Santa Monica. "Venice is a throwback to the early California days of the 60's & 70"s", says our TV grad, who now can be heard on Star 98.7, 7 pm - midnight.  We'll listen when we're on the West Coast!

Image grad DANIELLE BROWN (daughter of Laura Brown at our front desk, herself an Image/ Modeling/& soon Acting grad) is certainly making her presence known through her academics and personality as a freshman at Palm Beach Atlantic University, where she also works.  Also, she's currently employed at South Florida's Christian Hit Radio 88.1 Way fm, where she logs daily music schedules, plans promotions, meets celebrities, &...is beginning to be heard "on-air"! Danielle has voiced 3 commercials to date & promises to keep us posted.

Great news from TV grad/singer ERICA RIVERA, who worked on the Disney Channel's "That's So Raven" sitcom in L.A. this spring playing "Bianca", Raven. Simone's (The Cosby Show) nemesis.  Raven is scared of Bianca, who's a bully, complete with her own gang.  Erica was originally told she may be a recurring character, and this month, she returns to L.A. to reprise the role on a second episode (the first has yet to air).  Shooting schedule: Monday through Wednesday--sitcom rehearsal, Thursday--tape, Friday--tape before a live audience.  THIS is a schedule Erica loves, and we can't wait to see her mean side!

ARRIELE KEBBEL Alert:  Did you see Arielle in July on the HBO comedy pilot for "Entourage"?  After her appearance as Tom Arnold's daughter in the recent movie, Soul Plane, we're waiting for her next film, "Be Cool", John Travolta's sequel to "Get Shorty".  The past few weeks, Arielle's been shooting her next movie, "The Kid & I",  with Henry Winkler.  Obviously impressing her former on-screen father, Arielle was elated to learn Tom Arnold, who wrote the project based on a real young man who lives by him, named the character Arielle plays in a movie within this movie  --  you guessed it, "Arielle".  Governor Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis also appear in the film...if you didn't see our "In the News" reference to Arielle's brother, Christian, & his magnificent Orlando Sentinel review for recent theatrical work at Ice House, here's further proof all Kebbels work hard...sister Julia, currently employed at William Morris in L.A., has been offered a position with New Line Cinema working with the Vice President marketing their films internationally.  Congrats to Julia, who enjoys the "business" side of our business & will begin in August.  We'reso proud  of all 3 Kebbels, who, obviously, studied acting when they started with us.  We're destined to hear much more from everyone in the family!

In July, did you see singer/actor ASHLEY WEST featured in Calendar in The Orlando Sentinel?  You might have caught her last year on MTV's Sink or Swim, where, of course, she swam!!  Ashley kicked off Our Seminole Towne Center Back-to-School fashion shows, featuring the young graduates of our summer camp programs and teens from our professional modeling course, performing an exciting rendition of Janis Joplin's "Me & Bobby McGee". Currently writing and recording new material for a rock album, this talented 18-year-old TV grad, also a gifted songwriter, is back with us for Advanced Acting, & we're enjoying seeing her weekly.  You can catch Ashley singing weekly with Stampede every Friday and Saturday night at Mickey's Roadhouse, or check out www.ashleywest.com.

Last month's newsletter cover girl, singer/actor STEPHANIE BLICK, known in the recording industry as Stephanie D., opened our Back-to-School fashion shows at The Mall at Millenia with her version of "As I Lay Me Down to Sleep". Stephanie, who's signed a record deal with Luckysong Entertainment with distribution through Sony International, leaves for Germany again next month to shoot her 2nd TV show there and begin a September tour with the boy band, Natural. Her first single, "That's Why", has its European release August 23, with Stepha nie shooting its music video in South Beach, mid-June.  Listen for yourself at www.stephanie-d.com.

Some people are drawn into the industry in unique ways...ANNA HENRIQUEZ, one of the prettiest & most fit seniors you'll ever meet (at 5'2", a size 2, a real testimony to her dedication and health regimen), first became an Executive client when she requested Lisa "do her closet".  These ladies accomplished so much & had such a good experience, Anna enrolled for more wardrobe time.  Fast forward a year or so, & Anna, who also has a home in Atlanta (& very fine taste, according to Lisa) is shopping at Rich's when invited to appear in a special fashion show featuring distinguished customers.  She called upon the school once again for private coaching, and Lisa was excited to help Anna prepare for the runway.  We forced this humble lady to report on her stage debut... "they told me I did a great job, that I looked professional and like I was having fun!'  We bet it WAS fun, as with one of her outfits alone Anna modeled over $100,000 worth of jewelry from the Le Vian Collection!  Usually, the idea models keep the fashions they wear is just a misconception, but in this case, Anna

could select one outfit as a thank you (excluding the jewels)!  Topping it off, this new model was even interviewed during the show about her accomplishments and experiences with the Grammy Awards.  "Modeling was so very exciting, & I could really enjoy being on-stage because I was prepared", says Anna.  We predict lots more industry ahead for this attractive, hard-working young lady !

Congrats to all 5 of our grads who won Miss America preliminaries this year & competed in the Miss Florida Pageant recently!  Congrats to ALLISON KREIGER (Top 15 semi-finalist) for winning a Busch Gardens Community Service award, VALERIE LYNCH (Top 10 Finalist) and MEREDITH KOVARIK, recipient of the overall Interview Award & 4th runner-up!  We're proud of all our students & grads who competed this past year, winning thousands of dollars in scholarships!  Watch for  LM grad ERICKA DUNLAP, this year's Miss America, as she crowns a new queen on national TV in September!

I NEED A MONOLOGUE…….TODAY

I constantly get phone calls and emails from students with the following …“Kevin, I have a meeting tomorrow with an agent, and they want me to prepare a monologue. What should I do?  I provide them with my standard response. “Cancel your appointment.” I wish I could count the times I’ve had students call me with this question. A monologue is one and a half to two minutes of solo dialogue. It is a barometer of the level of your talent and training. The impression you make in that one to two minutes will last a very long time ,so it’s important that you have adequate preparation. So, what is a monologue? The word Monologue is derived from two words. “Mono”, meaning “one,” and “Logue,” from the word “dialogue.” Monologues actually date back to the Greek plays when  a character stepped out from the chorus to speak solo. Throughout the years, monologues have been used to audition actors for stage plays, always an effective way to watch the individual performance of the actor. Scene readings require the director to divide his attention between two or more people. Monologues focus the attention on just one person. In recent years, the monologue has been used  more and more because of its’ simplicity in the auditioning process. Who requires monologues? When I lived in LA, I rarely went to an agent interview without  the following, an updated demo reel and two contrasting monologues. Most actors say “Kevin, you have a demo reel, why do you need a monologue?” A demo reel is important but everyone knows that you get many takes to get the performance they see on film. What they look for is how you handle yourself live! All of the auditions held at Disney, Epcot and Bush Gardens require a monologue ,and sometimes two. If you do a general interview with a casting director, he/she will most likely ask you to prepare one or two monologues for the interview. If you audition for ANY theatre in ANY town ,they will require monologues. Thinking of going to New York or Los Angeles?  Don’t go unprepared. I promise, you will be consistently asked for one. So, how many monologues do you need? At the very minimum you will need two contrasting monologues, one comedic and one dramatic. If you plan to do theatre, then you should have a couple Shakespeare pieces in your collection. As time goes on your selections will change, because you grow out of the roles or become bored in performing them. A monologue is as important as a good headshot and resume or demo reel. It’s an important part of an actor’s bag of tricks. So make sure you leave plenty of time to prepare for the inevitable question “Do you have a prepared monologue you can bring in.”

A monologue is as important as a good headshot and resume or demo reel.”

We are committed to teach and guide our students and clients for success in the entertainment industry, in the work place, and in life!
